Ancient Scent was an artist-led project celebrating the process and philosophy of surrealist artist Ithell Colquhoun who lived and worked in the Lamorna Valley for many years during the second half of the C20th.
A group of West Country artists and writers, drawn together by their common interest in Colquhoun, met once a month for a year in a series of process based workshops held on location in Lamorna Valley.
The sessions took techniques from Colquhoun’s essay ‘The Children of the Mantic Stain’ these included: Stillomancy, Parsemage, Fumage, Frottage, Cottage and Scrying. These workshops culminated in an exhibition and evening event held at Lamorna Village Hall in October 2016. The evening event included the launch of the re-publication of Colquhoun's two travelogues: The Crying of the Wind and The Living Stones. As well as talks from Richard Shillitoe, Marcus Williamson and Steve Patterson.
The following Spring (2017) the group undertook a journey around Ireland following in the footsteps of Colquhoun and her book The Crying of the Wind: Ireland. Visiting a number of ancient sites including: Uisneach, Loughcrew and Clonmacnoise. The work that came out of this residency was shown in Spring 2018 at St Saviours, Plymouth (known to many as Robert Lenkiewicz' old library).
